Brazil is one of only two countries in South American that has nuclear power generating electricity. The other country is Argentina. During the 1970s and 1980s when they were governed by a military junta, Brazil had a secret nuclear weapons program. The rule of the junta ended in 1985 and in 1990, Brazil officially ended their nuclear weapons program.

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station remained shut down Tuesday after power lines that connect the plant to the region’s electric grid failed during last week’s winter storm.

            In my last blog post, I talked about an accident that sank a Soviet nuclear submarine in the Bay of Biscay which is north of Spain in1970. Today I am going to talk about another accident involving a Soviet nuclear submarine in 1985.
